Grammy Award Winning Flutist, Nestor Torres
Puerto Rican jazz flutist, born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, then moved to New York to study both jazz and classical music at the Mannes College of Music in New York and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
In 2010, Torres joined the faculty of Florida International University as a visiting guest artist and founding director of its School of Music's first charanga ensemble.
Torres is also a practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism and a longtime member of the Buddhist association Soka Gakkai International.
Powerhouse Big Band with a "Latin Theme"
In our culture, we pay homage to those that forged a path before us. A Latin Big Band Orchestra comprised of professional musicians, students and Educators, will perform songs from the musical books of two San Antonio Legends, the late PAUL ELIZONDO and Adalberto (Al) Gomez, Sr.
Bomba Y Plena Taller / Workshop
Presented by the Sociedad Herencia Puertorriqueña and straight from Puerto Rico, professional dance instructor Jeanitza Avila will showcase the traditional rhythms associated with the cultural dance, Bomba. Accompanied by award winning percussionists and educators Victor Rendon & Yasuyo Kimura of New York City, joined by Grammy award winner, Henry Brun.
